Pride has come to symbolize several things: the long history of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender dignity, the freedom of all people to meaningfully and proudly express their sexual and gender identities, and the commitment of LGBTQ+ people to combat oppression.
The first Pride was a riot against police brutality. We would not have Pride without Black people, especially Black trans women. Historically, Pride Celebrations commemorates the rebellion of LGBT patrons of the Stonewall Inn in New York City's Greenwich Village in response to a police raid on June 27, 1969. We would not have Pride without Black people, especially Black trans women. On June 28, 1970, the first Pride parade was held. It was until May 25, 1991, in D.C. that the first Black Pride celebration took place. Today, Dayton’s Black Pride is an opportunity to celebrate & remember the beauty in our cultures, the struggles of our people, and the progress we continue to make as Black and brown LGBTQ+ community members!
We invite all the support the continuing growth and those that understand the intersectionality of being Black or brown & in the LGBTQ+ community, to join us in the first Dayton Black Pride Parade!
